Tekla 2022 Global BIM Awards category winners
Commercial project :
Arup won the award in the commercial category for Lot R8, part of the King's Cross Masterplan in London. This high-profile project comprises a 13-storey office and residential building. The £110 million project will provide around 13,000 square meters of office space and over 70 apartments. The team comprising Arup, Argent, McLaren Construction, Piercy & Company, Severfield UK and Getjar used a common data environment based on Trimble® Connect® and applied an IFC-based exchange to collaborate with stakeholders. The group made extensive use of Tekla® Warehouse for content sharing. Another noteworthy aspect is the complex set of reinforcing bars designed for the project.
Project Public:
The extension to Helsinki airport - a T2 Alliance project - won the "Public" category and was awarded the prize for best BIM project. The jury praised the fact that the model used was created by just a few people and shared by many, particularly in view of the synchronized production and impressive dimensions of the project.
Industrial Project :
The creation of the Pierrefonds waste sorting center on the island of La Réunion (off the coast of East Africa) is a 230 million euro multi-year project led by a consortium of specialist companies headed by industrial contractor CNIM, which will address the energy and environmental issues facing the west and south of the island. The design created in Tekla® Structures, with Tekla® Model Sharing, combines sorting and processing units for recyclable materials and bio-waste, and will produce renewable electricity. The jury considered it an "environmentally friendly industrial project" located on "an interesting site".
Infrastructure project :
The winner in the Infrastructure category is an 870-meter viaduct, with a complex reinforced concrete superstructure and substructure consisting of 2 abutments and 21 piers. The TSC Innovation team, in collaboration with builder INCOT and reinforcement supplier Aceros Arequipa, used detailed (LOD400) and collaborative VDC engineering, prefabrication and IFC and cloud connectivity. The jury praised the impressive digital workflow, as disparate design teams used Tekla Model Sharing and Trimble Connect as a common data environment, "combining BIM data with conditions is an asset for decades to come".
Sports & Relaxation project :
In the Sports and Leisure category, the Tekla BIM 2022 award went to Tampere's Deck and Arena project. The site is highly complex, with a living oasis built on a railroad line in the middle of an urban area. The team from SRV Rakennus, Ramboll Finland and ARCO Architecture Company worked on around 500 models using Tekla Structures, Tekla Model Sharing, Trimble Connect and Trimble® SketchUp®. As part of the project, an initial InfraBIM-based information model was implemented. Infrastructure and traffic planning were implemented in a versatile way, with simulations used for traffic organization. Sustainability aspects were taken into account in a variety of ways, such as a condensation heat recovery system and solar collectors.
Small project :
The Big One is one of the UK's best-known roller coasters. Taziker Industrial won a Tekla BIM Award 2021 for its 9-track redevelopment project. The project involved crossing a tunnel and modifying the rail line for a smoother ride, in collaboration with dynamics engineers Westlakes Engineering. The team had to deal with complex geometry, using point clouds to determine the existing track geometry, which was then exported to improve the design, then re-imported for the new line design and final modeling. Tekla Structures played a key role in the success of this project, using its many tools such as point cloud import, layout manager and Grasshopper® linking capability, as well as the ability to cross-check with a total station to confirm the final geometry. The jury commented: "This type of project sets the bar very high for the industry as a whole".
Student project :
The winning student project was the design of a bridge over the Corrèze river, by a team of 6 students from the civil engineering department of the IUT du Limousin, who had just 13 working days to discover : the viaduct under construction, the working drawings in concrete & the mixed steel-concrete structure, Tekla Structures to model the as-built jetty and viaduct, but also to scan the jetty for missing ribs and to produce the exé reinforcement cages for the viaduct supports: piers, abutments, deck. The students presented the project to the exé methods engineer, the project manager and the owner. The jury was impressed, and declared: "There's a lot of new talent developing and entering the sector".
API Developer :
The Tekla Global BIM 2022 award for an API developer went to ScaffPlan, for its ScaffPlan® scaffolding modeling system built using Tekla Structures. By harnessing the full power of Tekla Structures, through the Tekla® open API, combined with ScaffPlan's functionality, it significantly increases companies' return on investment. A team of 5 developers worked on 3,000,000 lines of code. The solution is a strong endorsement of Trimble's platform strategy, which aims for 100% of the construction industry to create constructible information.
Special Mention :
The jury awarded a special mention to the E6 freeway project in Norway, a 23-kilometer freeway extension designed to improve traffic safety. It includes 240-meter bridges and 2 tunnel portals in CIP concrete. The team comprised ACCIONA Engineering, Ramboll, ACCIONA Construction, COWI, Statens Vegvesen (road authority) and Nye Veier (project owner). This is a truly large-scale BIM project, from design to construction, with digital information at the heart of decision-making, collaboration (through Tekla model sharing), coordination, data exchange between teams and, finally, the transfer of operations. Trimble® Quadri® was the main coordination environment for model federation and interdisciplinary coordination. The jury emphasized the effective use of IFC files, and the fact that Trimble Connect served as a link for information exchange between the project's structural, modeling, drafting and coordination teams.
